Facts and stats

Nike’s Mercurial line of football boots have always been synonymous with agility and speed. These boots have been engineered to be featherweight to allow swift movement between defenders and enable players to make lighting-quick cuts. The Mercurials are heavily endorsed by plenty of wingers and strikers who rely on their speed to make game-changing plays like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Philippe Coutinho among others.

These football boots debuted in the third quarter of 2019 and once again, Nike has come up with a speed boot that flashes the same brilliance that its previous iterations have shown. From its responsiveness and fit to its lightweight yet durable construction, the Mercurial Vapor Elite 13 is shaping up to be another solid addition to one of Nike’s most popular speed boots.

Fresh out of the box

One thing the Mercurials have consistently nailed in terms of design are its sleek and understated looks. The all-black colourway screams absolute class, with the Nike swoosh displaying an iridescent green-to-purple effect when viewed under the right lighting. Up top, you’ll find the 360° Flyknit upper that provides a snug, skin-to-skin fit.

What’s new to the Vapor 13 Elite is the addition of Nike’s high-tenacity yarn that gives the upper a soft, pliable feeling whilst reinforcing strength and flexibility. This contributes to a superior feel that gives a reliable touch on the ball, even during high-speed maneuvers.

The important stuff

While the Mercurial Vapors have always been known for their speed prowess, the question is how does it perform when worn on the field?

Touch – 10/10

It’s no surprise that the Mercurial Vapor 13 Elite provides an immaculate touch to the ball. The upper has little to no padding, which is actually a good thing for speed-oriented players because they want the boot to feel raw and engaging when it hits the ball. Combine that with the Mercurial’s lightweight characteristics and you get a football boot brings you a near-perfect touch whether you’re running at low or high speeds.

Control – 9/10

The Mercurial Vapor 13 Elite allows players to have consistent control over the ball thanks to Nike’s Grip system that optimizes ground contact to eliminate slippage. It also comes with the company’s All Conditions Control (ACC) technology to provide reliable control under dry and wet fields. Nike has thrown in an ultra-thin overlay on the upper that brings your foot closer to the ball for added responsiveness.

Passing – 8/10

Having a thin upper bodes well for the Mercurial Vapor 13 Elite when talking about its passing abilities. It provides an unmatched feel for making precise push passes as well as wall passes to a nearby teammate. The Vapor 13 Elites allows players to dribble the ball with more confidence than other speed boots due to its light weight and supreme fit.

Shooting – 8/10

A good speed boot should not only have a light touch, but also enough power to create chaos against opposing defenses. The good news is that the Mercurial Vapor 13 Elite has a much stiffer chassis compared to the Vapor 12s that gives wingers the stability they need to make big-time shots.

Fit – 8/10

In terms of fit, the Vapor 13 Elites utilize a 360° Flyknit upper for complete lockdown on top of the player’s foot. It comes with a one-piece inner lining and a padded heel for extra comfort when making rapid cuts and sudden directional changes.

Soleplate – 8/10

The soleplate for the Mercurial Vapor 14 Elite consists of a split-sole design which is seemingly becoming the trend with modern speed boots. The studs are slightly longer than the previous version and the stud configuration is even more aggressive, perfectly complimenting the playstyles of fast, quick-twitch players.

Value for money – 9/10

The Mercurial Vapor 13 Elites sit atop Nike’s speed boot line and the performance matches its price tag very well. You’re getting a featherweight football boot that has both the power and touch to make game-changing plays on the field. There’s a reason why the pros use and its feature set makes the Vapor 13 Elites an exceptionally good value-for-money purchase

The Educator’s Opinion

Few speed boots can match the well-roundedness of the Nike Mercurial Vapor 13 Elite. With these football boots, you can attack defenders at a rapid pace and dribble the ball with more confidence. For these reasons, we highly recommend the Vapor 13 Elites for wingers looking to elevate their play and add more zip to their step.
